Topical steroids can easily be said one of the most overly prescribed medicines that have some of the least amount of research put into them. They can by applied in response to a wealth of problems, and include various skin disorders and diseases like eczema, acne, dermatitis, rashes, and psoriasis. However, does this necessarily guarantee they are safe?

The common conception of topical steroids are that they are safe because they are administered by professionals within the medical industry. The reason they are so willing to write prescriptions for these medications are because they can potentially change the state of skin conditions.

Topical steroids are effective due largely to the speed in which they are absorbed into one's skin cells. In a nutshell, topical steroids serve to halt the release of numerous inflammation causing chemicals that are normally released when the skin comes into contact with allergens or irritation.

Left untreated, the inflammation-causing chemicals widen blood vessels causing redness and swelling. Relief is provided with topical steroids to the effects such as irritation and inflammation is reduced all due to the prevention of this release from within the skin. However, the application of such steroids often produces far greater side effects, both internal and on the skin.

As shown above, this list of consequences can bring about a problem greater than the one you had originally set out to eliminate with the initial usage of the topical steroids.
